First launched by Meta in collaboration with Ray-Ban in late 2023, these stylish smart glasses were initially announced as part of Meta’s ambition to integrate AI into everyday wearable technology. Now, with the latest updates in 2025, they have taken a major leap forward in accessibility.
The headline update is the introduction of the new “Look and Tell” feature, now available in the UK. This powerful AI function allows users to ask questions about their surroundings and receive immediate spoken feedback. Whether it’s identifying objects, reading text from a menu or shop sign, or describing street scenes, the glasses offer a new level of independence and information access for blind and partially sighted users.
From the outside, the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses look and feel like a typical pair of Ray-Bans — stylish, lightweight, and modern. Hidden within the frame, however, are built-in speakers, cameras, and voice-activated controls that connect to a smartphone and a Meta account. Small buttons on the arms of the glasses also provide tactile control options.
The built-in speakers deliver audio feedback without blocking out environmental sounds — a vital feature for safe navigation. Users can send voice-dictated messages via WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, get object recognition assistance, and even identify familiar faces.
Excitingly, the glasses have also integrated the ‘Be My Eyes’ functionality, enabling users to connect with sighted volunteers for live assistance when needed.

While the glasses start at £299 and can go up to £379 depending on frame and lens options, users can fit them with prescription lenses through their optician. An up-to-date smartphone is required to access all features.
It’s important to remember that, as empowering as this technology is, it must be used alongside traditional mobility aids, such as a long cane or a guide dog. This is not just a recommendation — it is absolutely essential. Smart glasses, no matter how advanced, cannot and will never replace critical mobility tools that have been developed over decades to ensure safety and independence for blind and partially sighted people. We cannot emphasise this enough.
Moreover, as magical as these AI-powered devices may seem, it’s important to acknowledge their limitations. Artificial Intelligence has a well-documented tendency to hallucinate — a polite way of saying that it can and does present inaccurate or entirely false information. As a blind person who regularly uses AI tools, I’m fully aware of the ways this technology benefits our community, but it’s vital to stay aware and cautious of these software limitations. Always verify information using multiple tools or human support where possible.
