Blind Ambition Response to RFK Jr’s Comments on Autistic People

Quote graphic featuring Seema Flower’s words: “Autistic individuals have always defied the low expectations placed upon them. They deserve to be seen for their talents, their aspirations, and their humanity.” The text is in dark blue, bold font, centred over a vibrant background of interlocking puzzle pieces in bright colours—red, yellow, blue, green, orange, and purple—symbolising neurodiversity and inclusion.

At Blind Ambition, we were dismayed to read the comments made by US Health and Human Services chief Robert F. Kennedy Jr suggesting that people with autism “will never pay taxes, they’ll never hold a job, they’ll never play baseball, they’ll never write a poem, they’ll never go on a date”. Such sweeping and damaging generalisations have no place in a modern, inclusive society.

Seema Flower, Founder of Blind Ambition, said:

“To suggest that autistic individuals cannot contribute meaningfully to society is not only deeply offensive but factually incorrect. Blind, partially sighted, and neurodivergent individuals have always defied the low expectations placed upon them. They pay taxes, hold down meaningful jobs, create poetry, achieve academic excellence, and build relationships. Autistic people, like all of us, deserve to be seen for their talents, their aspirations, and their humanity — not judged by outdated stereotypes.”

We echo the powerful words of the Love on the Spectrum cast who rejected these false narratives, reminding the world that autistic individuals are complex, capable, and thriving members of society.

Rather than focusing energy on “curing” autism or other forms of neurodiversity, we must work towards creating a society that values and supports people as they are. Inclusion, acceptance, and real opportunity must always be our priorities.
