Visual and Disability Awareness Training for the Care Sector

Creating Inclusive, Confident Teams in Residential and Home-Based Care

At Blind Ambition, we work alongside care providers to deliver powerful, practical training that supports your teams in providing safe, respectful, and legally compliant care to blind, partially sighted, and disabled individuals. With over 25 years of experience, we offer lived-experience-led training that not only educates, but transforms culture.

What We Offer

We provide two core types of awareness training, both available as standalone sessions or as part of a wider strategy for internal inclusion:

1. Visual Awareness Training

Designed specifically for those supporting blind and partially sighted residents in residential or domiciliary care.

This training includes:

  • Understanding the spectrum of visual impairment and its impact on daily life

  • Effective communication strategies, including verbal orientation and respectful interaction

  • Practising safe and supportive guiding techniques

  • Identifying and removing environmental barriers (lighting, signage, layout)

  • Providing dignified support with eating, mobility, personal care, and medication

Who is it for?
Ideal for frontline care staff such as carers, nurses, activity coordinators, domestic teams, and team leaders.

2. Disability Awareness Training

A broader introduction to supporting individuals with a range of disabilities, including physical, cognitive, sensory and neurodiverse needs.

This training includes:

  • An overview of different types of disability and common barriers in care

  • The Equality Act 2010 and your duties as a care provider

  • Inclusive communication techniques for individuals with hearing, mobility, or cognitive impairments

  • Everyday adjustments to make care environments and interactions more inclusive

  • Challenging unconscious bias and promoting dignity in practice

Who is it for?
A great introductory course for general staff across the care setting—administrators, receptionists, kitchen teams, or any non-clinical roles that engage with residents and families.

3. Train-the-Trainer Programmes

For care organisations looking to embed accessibility long-term, we offer Train-the-Trainer programmes in both Visual Awareness and Disability Awareness.

These advanced, in-person sessions are designed for managers, senior carers, or in-house trainers. Participants become inclusion champions, equipped to deliver training internally using a full resource pack.

What’s included:

  • Deep dive into disability or visual awareness

  • Presentation slides (1-hour and half-day versions)

  • Scenario cards, activity plans, and handouts

  • Custom video content filmed during the session

  • Feedback forms and evaluation templates

  • Sample training plans for internal roll-out

  • Templates for collecting staff feedback and tracking culture change

Our Train-the-Trainer model allows you to sustain momentum, meet compliance requirements, and reach all staff—even with turnover or rota challenges.

4. Rolling Training Programmes

In addition to standalone training, we also offer ongoing, scheduled sessions to support your organisation’s evolving needs.

You might choose:

  • Quarterly or biannual refresher training

  • Induction training for new staff

  • A blend of Visual and Disability Awareness across the year

This flexible model ensures your organisation continues to grow in confidence, even as your team evolves.

5. Inclusive Recruitment Consultancy

Disability inclusion doesn’t stop at care delivery—it starts with who you hire. We can review your recruitment process and help you:

  • Identify barriers in job adverts, application forms, and interview processes

  • Create accessible candidate journeys

  • Foster a welcoming environment for disabled jobseekers

  • Train hiring managers to feel confident and inclusive

This is not a token gesture—it’s a strategic advantage. The Accenture Disability Inclusion Imperative report shows that companies who lead on disability inclusion see:

  • 2x higher net income

  • 1.6x higher revenue

  • 2x more economic profit
Hiring disabled people isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s smart business.

“In the care sector, inclusion isn’t a luxury—it’s a duty of dignity. Visually impaired and disabled residents deserve to feel safe, understood and valued every single day.
