Last night at Green Templeton College, Oxford, Seema Flower, the visionary founder of Blind Ambition, delivered an electrifying speech to a hall filled with ambitious sixth-form students. As part of the Sixth Formers’ Career Evening, Seema’s message was clear: nothing is impossible if you put in the effort, believe in yourself, and refuse to let others define your limits.
Overcoming Adversity: A Lesson in Resilience
Seema’s personal journey is a testament to perseverance. Losing her sight to Retinitis Pigmentosa, she built multiple successful businesses, including Blind Ambition, which helps organisations create inclusive workplaces. She spoke candidly about the challenges she faced—not just the physical barriers of blindness but also the societal ones. “People told me I couldn’t. I showed them I could,” she told the students, emphasising the importance of self-belief.
Hard Work Beats Talent When Talent Doesn’t Work Hard
Success, Seema explained, is not reserved for the naturally gifted. It is earned through dedication and determination. She urged the students preparing for their A-levels to see challenges as stepping stones rather than obstacles. “The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t isn’t luck—it’s persistence,” she said, encouraging them to push through moments of self-doubt.
Living Someone Else’s Dream
Perhaps the most powerful part of Seema’s speech was her reminder that the opportunities these students have are ones that many around the world can only dream of. “If you’re sitting here tonight at Oxford, know that someone, somewhere, would give everything to be in your shoes,” she said. This powerful perspective urged students to make the most of their education, recognising the privilege and responsibility they hold.
Your Future is in Your Hands
Closing her speech, Seema left students with a challenge: What will you do with your opportunity? She reminded them that each of them has the potential to change the world—whether through science, business, activism, or innovation. “Whatever you choose to do, do it with passion, do it with determination, and never let anyone tell you that you can’t.”
It was particularly wonderful for Seema to be approached by one of the Oxford University students in attendance—someone she had previously trained as a young doctor at UCL in London. Seeing that student now studying at Oxford and on their own journey to change the world was a truly special moment, reinforcing the importance of supporting and mentoring the next generation.
