On 19 November 2025, Seema Flower, Managing Director of Blind Ambition, attended the DCC Employment Showcase hosted at Amazon’s London headquarters. The event brought together business leaders, disability organisations, and innovators from across the UK to explore new ways of unlocking opportunities for disabled people, particularly blind and partially sighted people who continue to face some of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

Organised by the Disability Charities Consortium (DCC) — a coalition of nine major disability charities including the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) — the showcase was designed to address the disability employment gap and inspire employers to build truly inclusive workplaces.

Inspiration, Collaboration, and Action

Amazon as Host – DCC Leading the Conversation

Amazon’s London headquarters provided an energetic backdrop for important discussions on inclusive recruitment, workplace adaptation, and the real-life experiences of disabled individuals navigating employment barriers.

The DCC curated a compelling agenda with practical insights for employers of every size.

Sir Charlie Mayfield Sets the Tone

Sir Charlie Mayfield, author of the Keep Britain Working review, delivered a powerful keynote highlighting why inclusive hiring is essential not only for society, but for business productivity and long-term economic growth.

His message was clear: inclusive workplaces are built through leadership, accountability, and meaningful engagement with disabled people.

Lived Experience at the Forefront

Attendees also heard personal stories from disabled employees, which sparked valuable discussions about:

  • digital accessibility

  • workplace adjustments

  • inclusive recruitment practices

  • the importance of supportive organisational culture

For blind and partially sighted people, these issues often determine whether they can enter — and remain in — employment. Hearing these experiences shared openly was both moving and motivating.

A Powerful Day for Blind Ambition

Seema found the session energising, constructive, and deeply aligned with Blind Ambition’s mission to reduce the 75% unemployment rate among blind and partially sighted people.

“When employers take time to listen, learn, and adapt, extraordinary things happen. Blind and partially sighted people are not a challenge to be managed — they are a reservoir of talent waiting to be recognised.”
Seema Flower, Managing Director, Blind Ambition
