This week, I had the pleasure of attending Highways UK 2024, an incredible event that brought together over 10,000 attendees and more than 375 exhibitors showcasing cutting-edge solutions for the highways sector. As someone deeply involved in accessibility and disability inclusion, events like these offer a vital platform to explore how the highways industry is evolving and how we can ensure that everyone—regardless of ability—can access and navigate our roadways safely.
Exploring New Solutions and Partnerships
Highways UK is known for being National Highways’ flagship event, and this year it didn’t disappoint. From asset management technology to digital construction software and kerbside management systems, the exhibition was filled with innovative materials and strategies that are shaping the future of our infrastructure. What I found particularly inspiring were the partnerships being forged to solve real-world challenges. The discussions around sustainability, environmental impact, and how we can use technology to improve safety on our roads were particularly exciting.
As someone who has worked extensively with companies like Cadent and Forefront on improving accessibility for disabled people, I was eager to see how the industry is addressing inclusivity in its innovations. Accessibility must be front and center in these discussions, and I was encouraged to see how many exhibitors are considering diverse needs in their designs and solutions.
National Highways’ Leadership
The National Highways stand was a central hub of activity, featuring specialized zones like the Customer Zone, Safety Zone, Bikertek, and the Environment and Procurement Space. Each area provided insights into the work being done to improve the safety and sustainability of the UK’s highways. One standout was the National Highways Theatre, which offered specialist talks on crucial topics, from environmental sustainability to groundbreaking innovations. It was a great opportunity to hear from some of the best minds in the industry about the future of highways.
A highlight of Day 1 was the keynote address by Nick Harris, whose leadership at National Highways is driving the sector forward. His vision for the future of highways in the UK reflects a strong commitment to not only maintaining but enhancing the safety and accessibility of our road networks.
A Special Thanks
The day was filled with meaningful conversations and new connections. Special thanks to Julie from HUAC for taking the time to show me around and introduce me to some fantastic people. The event culminated with a drink’s reception, giving everyone a chance to reflect on the day’s insights and discussions, and continue building those important connections.
Looking Ahead
Highways UK 2024 reminded me of how critical it is that we continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in infrastructure and accessibility. Whether it’s through innovative partnerships or emerging technologies, the work being done here will undoubtedly shape the future of the UK’s roads. And, as always, my focus remains on ensuring that these innovations include everyone, including the blind and partially sighted community.
If you’re attending Day 2, be sure to explore the many exciting zones and discussions taking place. And if you’d like to chat about accessibility or how Blind Ambition can work with your company to improve inclusivity, I’d be more than happy to connect!
Looking forward to more exciting conversations and collaborations as we continue to make our roads safer and more accessible for all.
