Attending the recent Lloyds Bank Disability and Inclusion event at BAFTA was nothing short of inspiring. It was here that I had the pleasure of once again meeting Martyn Sibley, a name synonymous with leadership, resilience, and transformative change in the world of disability inclusion. Martyn’s journey from facing immense personal challenges to becoming a renowned advocate, entrepreneur, and change-maker is truly remarkable. But what made this event even more significant was the shared sense of purpose and vision that Martyn and I hold, a vision driven by a deep commitment to a more inclusive society.
Martyn Sibley: A Visionary Leader in Disability Inclusion
Martyn Sibley is not just an accomplished professional but a figure who has redefined what it means to live life with ambition and purpose despite significant obstacles. Born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Martyn has faced societal exclusion, stereotypes, and physical challenges head-on. Yet, he has emerged as a powerful leader, inspiring others to see beyond limitations and reach their full potential.
His impressive achievements include a BA in Economics, a master’s degree in Marketing, and a career that spans roles such as content creator, author, and advisor. As the co-founder of Accomable, an accessible travel startup acquired by Airbnb, and Disability Horizons, an influential online magazine, Martyn has consistently advocated for greater inclusivity. Currently, he serves as CEO and co-founder of Purple Goat Agency, a trailblazing marketing firm dedicated to disability inclusion. His consistent ranking among the top 100 most influential disabled people highlights his impact—a recognition I am humbled to share alongside him.
Seema Flower: A Tireless Advocate for Change
As a disability advocate and the founder of Blind Ambition, my own journey has also been defined by resilience and a determination to create meaningful change. Living with total blindness, I have firsthand experience of the barriers that society often puts in place. This personal understanding fuels my work, from consulting with businesses to championing accessible practices across industries. I have collaborated with major organisations, including the UK Parliament, NHS Trusts, and financial services, to help foster inclusive practices that pave the way for a fairer society.
My dedication has earned me a place as a trusted voice in disability advocacy. Like Martyn, I have faced and overcome significant personal and professional challenges. But through determination, I have built Blind Ambition into a consultancy that has transformed how many organisations approach accessibility and inclusion. From advocating for employment opportunities for the visually impaired to developing training programs that empower others to become Disability Champions, my mission has always been to move the agenda forward and create tangible change.
A Shared Commitment to Progress
Meeting Martyn at various industry events over the years has become a source of mutual inspiration. Our conversations often revolve around how to push the boundaries of what’s possible and amplify the voices of disabled communities. Although we have yet to share a panel discussion, the anticipation of such an opportunity is exciting. I have no doubt that when it happens, it will be a powerful conversation filled with insight, shared experiences, and actionable ideas for driving inclusion forward.
At the recent BAFTA event, the collective energy was palpable. It was a space where leaders in the disability community, advocates, and businesses came together to reaffirm their commitment to creating a more inclusive world. Martyn’s vision for breaking down barriers and my drive to ensure accessibility and employment opportunities are available for all merged seamlessly, reinforcing the idea that true change requires collaborative effort. We both understand that businesses need to take responsibility for building diverse workforces, and governments must invest in empowering citizens who have been left behind by economic systems.
Driving Change Through Shared Experiences
What makes Martyn and me effective advocates is that we share not only our achievements but also our struggles. From overcoming spinal fusion surgery and battling pneumonia (something I’ve also done) in Martyn’s case to navigating inaccessible systems and fighting for equal opportunities as a visually impaired person in mine, our stories are not just tales of resilience—they are calls to action. Our journeys demonstrate that while personal strength is important, collective action is vital for creating real and lasting change.
Whether it is Martyn’s infectious optimism, exemplified by his mantra, “Smiling is infectious, you can catch it like the flu,” or my own dedication to uplifting the visually impaired community, our paths intersect in more ways than one. We are often seen at the same events, exchanging ideas and motivating those around us to do more. These moments of connection strengthen our shared commitment and keep us pushing the agenda for inclusion.
The Future We Are Building
Both Martyn and I envision a world where inclusivity is not an aspiration but a norm. This shared vision is grounded in the belief that collaboration, education, and advocacy are key to creating a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive. Through events, workshops, and training programs, we continue to champion this cause, each contributing our unique perspectives and expertise.
As we both work toward this future, the potential for deeper collaborations and shared platforms remains bright. I look forward to the day when Martyn and I stand together on a panel, not just as advocates but as living proof of what is possible when barriers are broken down and inclusivity is embraced wholeheartedly.
Join Us in Moving the Agenda Forward
The work Martyn and I do is just a small part of the larger movement. We invite you to join us in challenging norms, advocating for change, and creating opportunities that benefit all. As Martyn says, “Small actions will have a big impact. YOU can help change the world, benefiting EVERYONE in the process!” Let’s continue to take those small actions—whether by advocating for accessible workplaces, supporting inclusive policies, or simply spreading awareness. Together, we can create a future where diversity and inclusion are at the heart of every conversation and action.
Solutions come from collaboration, and change is made when we work together.
