Today marked a truly exciting milestone for Blind Ambition as we officially launched our brand-new Blind Ambition Recruitment website – a platform dedicated to tackling one of the most urgent issues facing our community: unemployment among blind and partially sighted people.
Hosted at Aston University in Birmingham as part of the Visionary Conference, the launch brought together charity leaders, employers, and partners from across the country. The atmosphere was electric, and the response to the new platform was overwhelmingly positive.
Delegates praised the recruitment website as a bold step forward in providing blind and partially sighted people with better access to meaningful employment opportunities. With 75% of working-age blind people currently unemployed, the need for change is stark. This website represents both a practical tool and a powerful statement: that blind and partially sighted people bring skills, talent, and determination to the workplace and deserve the same opportunities to thrive.
As one delegate put it, “This is exactly the kind of initiative we need – something that doesn’t just talk about the barriers but actively helps to remove them.”
The event also highlighted the strong spirit of collaboration that underpins the project. National and regional charities shared their enthusiasm for working with us, whether by advertising roles directly on the site, sharing resources, or exploring other ways of support. We were particularly encouraged by discussions around how the website can also help people take first steps into trustee roles and volunteering – often a vital pathway to paid employment and building confidence.
Speaking at the launch, Seema Flower, founder of Blind Ambition, said:
“We know that blind and partially sighted people are hugely underrepresented in the workforce, but that does not mean they are not capable. This website is about levelling the playing field – giving people the chance to show their skills, build their careers, and secure their financial future. We’re so proud of what we’ve created and we’re excited to see it grow.”
This is just the beginning. In the coming weeks, we will be posting opportunities from a wide range of charities and employers who share our vision for inclusion. We’ll also continue developing features that make the site even more accessible and effective for both job seekers and employers.
The launch today proved that there is real appetite for change – and with the support of our partners, employers, and the community, Blind Ambition Recruitment is ready to be part of the solution.
