Sebastian Stan, celebrated actor and now first-time Golden Globe winner, delivered a poignant and powerful acceptance speech at the 82nd Annual Golden Globes held at The Beverly Hilton on 5 January 2025. Winning the award for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Stan was recognised for his transformative portrayal of Edward in A Different Man, a role that dives deep into the life of an aspiring actor with neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition causing tumours to grow on the skin and bones.

In his acceptance speech, Stan brought attention to an issue rarely discussed with such candour in Hollywood—society’s prejudices around disability and disfigurement. He stated:
“Aaron Schimberg and Adam Pearson at home, I wish you were here. I share this with you. Thank you for your trust. Our ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now. We have to normalize it and continue to expose ourselves [and our children] to it. Encourage acceptance. One way we can do that is by continuing to champion stories that are inclusive.”
Stan’s speech was a heartfelt reminder of the power of storytelling to shape societal perceptions and promote acceptance. His performance in A Different Man and his other critically acclaimed work in The Apprentice reflect his dedication to portraying complex, challenging narratives.
“This was not an easy movie to make. Neither is The Apprentice, the other film that I was lucky to be a part of and that I am proud to be in,” Stan continued. “These are tough subject matters, but these films are real and they are necessary. We can’t be afraid and look away.”
