International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2025: Building a Future Where No One Is Left Behind

Each year on 3 December, the world marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) — a moment to recognise the achievements, challenges, and rights of disabled people globally. For Blind and Partially Sighted People, this day is not only symbolic but a vital reminder that accessibility, independence, and opportunity must remain at the heart of every conversation about inclusion.

This year’s theme continues the UN’s mission to “leave no one behind”, calling on governments, businesses, and communities to dismantle the barriers that still restrict disabled people’s full participation in society. At Blind Ambition, this message resonates deeply with our work — because inclusion must go far beyond good intentions. It requires action, awareness, and meaningful change.

Why This Day Matters

With disabled people making up around 16% of the global population, IDPD is not a niche observance — it is a call to acknowledge one of the world’s largest and most diverse communities.

For Blind and Partially Sighted People:

  • Accessibility gaps still limit access to employment, healthcare, and digital services.

  • The unemployment rate remains shockingly high, with 75% of blind people in the UK currently out of work.

  • Everyday environments, from transport systems to street works, are still too often designed without considering visual impairment.

  • Digital exclusion remains a major barrier as essential services move online.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities encourages us all to pause and ask: What more can we do?
And more importantly: What must change?

Blind Ambition’s Mission on IDPD and Beyond

Founded by Seema Flower — a visually impaired entrepreneur and advocate — Blind Ambition works year-round to challenge these inequalities. From employment support and recruitment to disability awareness training and accessible street works initiatives, our mission is clear:

To ensure Blind and Partially Sighted People have the same opportunities, dignity, and independence as everyone else.

We are proud to collaborate with businesses, utilities, universities, the NHS, local government, and major employers across the UK, helping them embrace inclusion with confidence and clarity.

Seema Flower’s Message for International Day of Persons with Disabilities

“This day reminds us that disability inclusion is not a favour — it is a fundamental right. Blind and Partially Sighted People bring resilience, talent, creativity, and lived experience that enrich every workplace and community. True inclusion happens when society removes the barriers, not when disabled people are asked to work around them.” — Seema Flower

How You Can Support Inclusion Today

Here are simple but meaningful actions organisations and individuals can take:

1. Commit to Accessible Communication

Clear language, audio alternatives, alt text, and accessible documents aren’t optional — they are essential.

2. Make Recruitment Inclusive

Implement accessible job adverts, unbiased screening, and support in interviews so Blind and Partially Sighted People can fully demonstrate their skills.

3. Make Physical Environments Safe

Good signage, tactile surfaces, safe street works, and unobstructed pathways transform independence for visually impaired people.

4. Provide Training Rooted in Lived Experience

Our trainers at Blind Ambition deliver powerful workshops that help teams understand disability from real-world perspectives.

5. Listen — and Act

Disabled people know better than anyone what needs to change. Organisations that listen, learn, and adapt make the biggest impact.
