Blindness Cured with ‘Revolutionary’ Bionic Chip: A New Era for Artificial Vision

Blind and partially sighted people are seeing the world anew thanks to a revolutionary electronic eye implant that is helping patients read, recognise faces and even enjoy books again.

Developed by California biotech company Science Corporation and trialled at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, this breakthrough technology marks what experts are calling “a new era” for artificial vision.

The Prima bionic chip — an ultra-thin, 2 mm-wide wireless microchip — is inserted under the retina and works with a video camera mounted on a pair of augmented-reality glasses. The camera captures images in real time, which are processed by AI and converted into an infrared signal. This signal is beamed to the implant, stimulating the healthy inner retinal cells, which then send visual information to the brain via the optic nerve.


Restoring Sight and Hope

For patients like Sheila Irvine, 70, from Wiltshire, the results have been life-changing. Sheila, who is registered blind due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), said:

“Before the implant, I had two black discs in front of my eyes — I couldn’t read or drive. I was an avid bookworm and I wanted that back. When I finally saw a letter on the page again, it was dead exciting. It’s a new way of seeing.”

Sheila can now read her post, books, and even do crosswords again. “It’s beautiful, wonderful — it gives me such pleasure,” she told the BBC. “I am one happy bunny.”

The chip is being tested across Europe, with 38 patients enrolled in trials across the UK, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. Results published in the New England Journal of Medicine show that over 80 per cent of participants experienced major improvements, with one patient improving by as many as 59 letters — or 12 lines — on a standard eye chart.


A Major Advance in Artificial Vision

Consultant ophthalmic surgeon Mr Mahi Muqit, who leads the UK arm of the trial at Moorfields, said:

“These are elderly patients who were no longer able to read, write or recognise faces due to lost vision. They’ve gone from darkness to being able to use their vision again. In the history of artificial vision, this represents a new era.”

For now, the technology is still in clinical trials, but researchers are optimistic that it could be available to NHS patients within a few years.


The Science Behind the Sight

In a healthy retina, light-sensitive cells transform light into electrical pulses that are sent to the brain via the optic nerve. In people with geographic atrophy (GA) — an advanced form of dry AMD affecting around 250,000 people in the UK — these cells die, causing central vision loss.

The Prima implant bypasses these damaged cells, effectively reconnecting the brain to vision. Patients use glasses fitted with a miniature video camera that sends infrared signals to the chip. After the device is implanted, it takes several months of training for the brain to learn how to interpret the new images.

Each session helps patients refine how they “see” again — a process both emotional and extraordinary to witness.

“It’s pioneering and life-changing technology,” said Mr Muqit. “This is the first implant that’s been shown to give meaningful, functional vision — the kind patients can use for reading and recognising faces.”


Beyond AMD: What the Future Might Hold

While the current trials focus on macular degeneration, the possibilities for this technology extend far beyond one condition. Future versions of the bionic chip may hold potential for other forms of sight loss, offering hope to millions worldwide.

Intriguingly, this new era of artificial vision may one day go beyond human sight itself. As Seema Flower noted:

“Who knows where this might lead? Today, it’s restoring lost vision — but tomorrow, we could see technology that helps blind people perceive infrared or ultraviolet light, just like Geordi La Forge in Star Trek. It reminds us that disability and innovation often move hand-in-hand.”
