Blind Ambition Campaign: Make Audio Description Mandatory for All TV Platforms

Audio Decsription Logo
At Blind Ambition, we believe entertainment should be accessible to all. Yet, millions of blind and visually impaired people are excluded due to the lack of audio description (AD) on many TV platforms. Recently, Tim Dixon, a member of our WhatsApp community, raised concerns about Now TV’s failure to provide AD, sparking a powerful campaign for change. As Seema Flower, founder of Blind Ambition, explains: “Accessibility isn’t a luxury—it’s a fundamental right. Audio description ensures blind audiences are included in the cultural experiences that unite us.” Inspired by Tim’s advocacy and Chris McCausland’s powerful Alternative Christmas Message, we’re calling for mandatory AD on all TV and streaming platforms. Join us in demanding a world where entertainment is truly inclusive. #AudioDescriptionForAll #InclusionMatters
Entertainment is a universal way to connect, unwind, and share experiences. But for blind and visually impaired people, these connections are often cut short by the lack of audio description (AD) across TV platforms and streaming services. It’s time for that to change. At Blind Ambition, we’re proud to amplify the voices of our community and drive meaningful action for equality and inclusion. Recently, Tim Dixon, a valued member of our Blind Ambition WhatsApp group, raised an urgent issue about Now TV’s lack of audio description, sparking a powerful discussion about accessibility in entertainment. This conversation led Tim to take action on LinkedIn, calling out Sky’s Now TV for failing to offer AD on their platform. His post has gained significant attention, highlighting the frustrations of blind and visually impaired audiences who are excluded from enjoying the same access to on-demand content as sighted viewers.

The Problem: Audio Description Isn’t Optional—it’s Essential

Audio description provides a narrated account of key visual elements in TV shows and films, making the content accessible to blind and visually impaired people. Yet, many platforms, including Now TV, refuse to integrate AD into their services, even when it’s readily available for live broadcasts. Tim shared his disappointment in the group: “It’s shocking that in 2024, a platform as large as Now TV still doesn’t support blind audiences. Sky has the AD tracks—it’s just a choice not to include them.”

A Powerful Call for Inclusion

Tim’s actions echo the sentiments shared in Channel 4’s Alternative Christmas Message, delivered by Chris McCausland, the blind comedian and winner of Strictly Come Dancing 2024. Chris used his platform to shine a light on disability inclusion and the barriers blind people still face in everyday life, including in culture and entertainment. As Chris said, “Inclusion isn’t just about ramps and lifts—it’s about making cultural spaces accessible so that no one feels left out.” His triumph on Strictly this year was not just a personal victory but a watershed moment for the blind community, demonstrating that inclusion is not just possible—it’s necessary.

Blind Ambition’s Campaign for Change

Seema Flower, founder of Blind Ambition, has long advocated for greater accessibility, and Tim’s campaign aligns perfectly with our mission to build a world where blind and visually impaired people can thrive. As Seema explains: “Accessibility is not a favour; it’s a right. Audio description isn’t a luxury—it’s essential for equality. Entertainment should be for everyone, and we won’t stop until every platform recognises this.”

What Needs to Happen?

We’re calling for:
  1. Legislation: Mandatory requirements for audio description on all TV platforms, including live and on-demand content.
  2. Corporate Responsibility: Companies like Sky and Now TV must prioritise AD as part of their accessibility commitments.
  3. Regulation: Ofcom and government bodies must enforce stricter rules for accessibility in entertainment.
  4. Community Action: Our community has the power to drive change by raising awareness and holding platforms accountable.

How You Can Help

Join the movement:
  • Support Tim Dixon’s Campaign: Visit Tim’s LinkedIn post here to like, comment, and share.
  • Speak Up: File complaints with platforms like Now TV. The more they hear from their audience, the harder it is to ignore.
  • Tag and Share: Use social media to tag broadcasters and organisations like the RNIB, demanding action on AD.
  • Spread the Word: Share Chris McCausland’s Alternative Christmas Message and other stories of inclusion to build awareness.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

At Blind Ambition, we know the power of community. Tim’s advocacy started as a conversation in our WhatsApp group and is now gaining national attention. But we need your help to make this campaign even bigger. Let’s demand a world where audio description is the norm, not the exception. Join us in making entertainment accessible for everyone. #BlindAmbitionCampaign #AudioDescriptionForAll #InclusionMatters
