🚨 Blind Ambition Statement on Planned Disability Benefits Cuts: A Deepening Crisis

At Blind Ambition, we are outraged by the Government’s plans to cut vital disability benefits — including narrowing eligibility for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and reducing the health component of Universal Credit. These changes will have devastating consequences for millions of Disabled people, including those who are blind or partially sighted. We stand in full solidarity with Disability Rights UK in opposing these punitive proposals.

These cuts are not just administrative tweaks — they are an assault on the basic dignity and independence of Disabled people. They will push even more people into poverty, create further barriers to employment, and undermine the very support systems designed to enable disabled individuals to participate fully in society.

Let’s be clear: this is not about economic prudence — it’s about political priorities. The Government claims it is unsustainable to continue supporting the current levels of disability benefits, yet it refuses to look to the wealthiest in society or close corporate tax loopholes. Instead, it scapegoats Disabled people for economic challenges they did not create.

We know from our own work at Blind Ambition — whether in the legal sector, financial services, healthcare, or infrastructure — that Disabled people face systemic discrimination and inaccessibility every day. Employment rates among blind and partially sighted people remain staggeringly low, with 75% unemployed. Many of our clients already face long waiting times for Access to Work support and inaccessible job application processes. Cutting benefits like PIP — which help cover the costs of mobility aids, guide dogs, and support workers — will make it even harder for people to seek and retain employment.

As our founder Seema Flower says:

“These planned cuts are short-sighted, cruel, and economically illiterate. Instead of empowering Disabled people to thrive, the Government is pulling the rug out from under them. Disability inclusion is not a luxury — it’s a legal and moral obligation.”

This is a distressing time for many of our community members, who are understandably anxious about how these proposed changes will affect their ability to live independently, travel safely, and access the support they need. Blind Ambition will continue to fight for fair, inclusive, and accessible systems that uphold the rights of all Disabled people.

We urge the Government to listen — not only to the voices of outrage, but to the real-life stories of those these cuts will impact most. And we urge our supporters, partners, and fellow organisations to join us in speaking out.

We will not be silent. We will continue to campaign, collaborate, and advocate for a society where Disabled people are respected, supported, and treated as equal citizens.
